Ursula’s Backstory Gets an Interesting TWIST in Disney’s Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’

Disney has been remaking a lot of the classic animated films into live-action movies and one that has been in the works for a little while now is The Little Mermaid.

Disney had announced the full cast list but had to pause on filming for a short period of time due to the ongoing health crisis. However, filming resumed at the beginning of December 2020, so we’re getting closer to seeing this underwater story come to life. And, we’re starting to get a few more details about what we can expect in the movie.

According to Deadline, Ursula (who will be played by Melissa McCarthy) will actually be taking on the role of the evil aunt of Ariel (played by Halle Bailey). So, it will be a bit different from the animated film Disney fans know.

So, yes, King Triton will be related to Ursula and Ariel will be bribed by her aunt — some sticky family drama. But, this adjustment to the story isn’t entirely out of the blue. When the movie was originally being thought up, the idea was to make Triton and Ursula a sibling pair. But, the concept fizzled and was ultimately abandoned.

In addition to this revelation, Disney also announced that Jessica Alexander has joined the cast but her role in the movie is still unknown.

  1. I wonder if Molly will be afraid of the new Ursula too. Or is her fear of Ursula only for the animated version.
