What’s Going On With These Disney Rides?

As Disney World’s 50th anniversary kicks off, it’s been a little quiet on Disney’s end about all the celebrations they promised.

After the closures last year, plans had to be completely changed or even scrapped to accommodate the “new normal” at the theme parks for the foreseeable future. Right now, it’s part of our every day park visits to see construction happening all around the property as Disney World attempts to move forward with as many intended projects as possible.

Here’s the current status on three major projects that Disney has not released recent dates for.

TRON Lightcycle Power Run

Originally, the TRON Coaster had been planned by Disney to be one of the huge debuts to guests in the Magic Kingdom for the 50th anniversary. Now, with a whole list of halted projects and slowed down construction, the TRON Lightcycle Power Run’s 2021 opening has been delayed.

Progress has continued to be made in Disney World with the expansive canopy being installed as the ride takes shape.

However, a recent report indicated that the ride will likely debut after this year’s 50th anniversary celebrations. Only time will tell, but a lot of signs point to this ride not meeting its previously expected 2021 opening date.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind

Since there are so many projects and experiences in the works, Disney has had to prioritize specific attractions and resorts across its U.S. theme parks. And, one of those rides is the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster coming to EPCOT’s Future World!

As of late, the outside of the attraction has been fitted with solar panels on the room and plywood to construct the entrance area. While we can’t step inside the attraction at the moment, we have gotten a sneak peek inside as the ride vehicles have been created, the track has been constructed, and ride-through testing has even begun.

Originally, the attraction was set to open in 2021, but it’s another ride that Disney has been quiet with updates on.

Splash Mountain Re-Design

Last year, Disney announced that the long-running Splash Mountain would be re-themed to a The Princess and the Frog bayou ride in both Disney World and Disneyland. We weren’t given a specific timeline about the attraction during its announcement, but we were told that the musical bayou ride would follow the adventures of Princess Tiana and Louis after The Princess and the Frog‘s grand finale.

At the end of 2020, though, the Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro provided additional details about the attraction during his keynote speech at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Expo (IAAPA). He noted that “Guests facing changes, like the reimagining of Splash Mountain, have been expedited to ensure that all who visit the company’s parks do feel welcome as well.”

Even though this re-design has moved up from the back burner, we haven’t heard an update on an expected timeline since Disney’s original announcement in June 2020.

  1. Hopefully we never hear about the Splash re-theme ever again. I’d assume the mostly negative reaction to the announcement has caused them to at least rethink the idea.
