Tons of Marvel Cinematic Universe updates came out from San Diego Comic-Con this week, but even die-hard Marvel fans might have missed this major MCU news.
Wonder Man premiered on Disney+ on January 27th to high audience and critical acclaim and was quickly renewed for a second season in March. But according to Variety, season two was just axed!
Wonder Man has officially been canceled at Disney+. According to Variety’s sources, a writers’ room for season two was never opened, and the show’s writers have been released to pursue other projects.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation who spoke to Variety, while Wonder Man is not proceeding with season two, this likely isn’t the end for the superhero. The characters featured in the series could still appear in other future Marvel projects, especially Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, which feature a whopping 26 Marvel superheroes with the full cast list still under wraps.
In season one, Wonder Man follows struggling actor Simon Williams trying to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with veteran actor Trevor Slattery, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the (fictional) superhero film Wonder Man. These two actors at opposite ends of their careers pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry. No plot details for season two had been announced before the cancellation.
The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the titular character Wonder Man, earning him an Emmy nomination for outstanding lead actor in a comedy series this year. The show also stars Ben Kingsley returning as Trevor Slattery from Iron Man 3, as well as Arian Moayed of Inventing Anna with X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Olivia Thirlby, and Byron Bowers.
