While places like Disney Springs and Universal Orlando CityWalk have started to reopen, movie theaters aren’t projected to welcome guests until later this summer.
Although there will be new health and safety protocols in the way, many people in the entertainment industry are hopeful for the state of theaters and the film business during this time.
According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, films coming to theaters soon will still likely have success, even with lowered crowds. Mulan happens to be one of the first movies to hit theaters, premiering on July 24th when movie theaters re-open to the public.
Showings may be limited to 25-50% of previous capacity to abide by the “checkered seating” rule for distancing between guests. However, that still mean plenty of people will be able to visit. The Paramount president of domestic distribution stated that, “Even at reduced capacity because of social distancing, there would will be plenty of seats for the summer release schedule the way it is mapped out now.”
During the week, the attendance to movie showings are lower. But, it’s also typical for 50% of the seats in movie theaters to be empty on the weekends. Walt Disney CEO Bob Chapek even pointed out that capacity to films hover at around 25% for showings on Monday through Friday afternoons.
However, there will be a lot of seats available for guests to see the films. According to the Hollywood Reporters’ analysts’ calculations, there could be anywhere from 25 million to 40 million seats available during the week or 79 to 90 millions seats on the weekends across the country. To put that in perspective, Avengers: Endgame would fill around 44 million to break records.
Although movie theater showings may not be typical to what guests or theaters are used to, there is still excitement over watching a film on the big screen. President and COO of Arclight Cinemas Ted Mundorff stated that, “I’m happy to max out at any capacity we have to abide by. It means people want to come back to the movies. And 50 percent would be a very healthy crowd.”
At this point, movie theaters aren’t scheduled to re-open until blockbuster hits make their way to the big screen later this summer. We’ll keep you updated with more information!
