One thing that’s a massive part of fan culture in the Disney parks is pin trading!

Walk in any gift shop and you’ll find pins for sale. Around the parks, you’ll see Cast Members displaying their collections and kids with lanyards. But that’s just entry-level pin trading. There are some truly hardcore pin traders out there, and Disney’s cracking down on how it’s done.
Pin trading rules have recently changed at Disneyland Resort…but it isn’t the first time. For a little while, Disneyland was only allowing personal pin trading in a dedicated area near Westward Ho Trading Company in Disneyland Park. This meant that those who brought big binders full of pins could meet up each day until 3PM and trade with the other die-hard pin traders.

Those rules did not apply to pin trading with Cast Members, where you check out the posted pin boards around the park or trade with Cast Members’ personal stashes. It wasn’t much change if you’re the type of person to bring a lanyard or small zipper pouch with pins and do your trading more casually.

But now, there’s another rule update for the pin trading processes in Disneyland. A rule has been added to the website, stating, “Benches or any other structures for the display of pins will not be permitted. Benches are for seating purposes only.”
This means that those with large binders and collections can no longer use public seating areas to spread out and put their pins on display. It seems as though Disneyland will be going back to the “no dedicated area” for pin trading approach.

During our latest stop by the park after the rules were updated, pin traders weren’t acting like things had changed! The crowds weren’t holding back. In fact this was the busiest we’ve seen it in a long time.

There were several Cast Members around, but they weren’t being too strict on the updated rules. This could change in the future! We do think that the pin portfolio folders did look a bit smaller compared to some we’ve seen in the past.

There is signage about pin trading etiquette nearby, so it never hurts to check in on those rules next time you’re there. We won’t be surprised if Cast Members start cracking down on these rules over the next week or so.

We’ve seen a similar situation in Disney World recently, with pin trading taking over seating areas in EPCOT in particular. There is yet no rule about this on the Disney World pin trading page.

We’ll make sure to keep you in the loop if any other rules are updated. Stay tuned to AllEars by subscribing to our newsletter.
