33 years after the Sanderson first flew into multiplexes — and 4 years after the film’s first legacy sequel premiered on Disney+ — the delayed third film in the franchise is officially moving forward.

A third Hocus Pocus film was first announced back in 2023, but executive changes at Disney seemed to slow work on the project. However, Variety has confirmed that the film is officially in development with stars Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy returning.

Released in 1993, the first Hocus Pocus film was not a box office success. The Kenny Ortega film, which starred Omri Katz and Thora Birch in addition to Midler, Parker, and Najimy, lost over $16 million at the box office. However, over the ensuing years, the film — which revolves around a teenage boy (Katz) inadvertently resurrecting the three witches — became a cult classic thanks to annual October airings on the Disney Channel and Freeform network.

In turn, the characters became Disney spooky season icons, appearing annually at events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party…

That popularity led to 2022’s Hocus Pocus 2, which premiered on Disney+. The sequel, which featured the three stars in addition to newcomers Sam Richardson, Whitney Peak, Belissa Escobedo, Tony Hale, and Hannah Waddingham, was a massive success on the platform. The film had 2.7 billion minutes viewed in its opening weekend, becoming the most-watched original film on Disney+ at the time over its first three days of release.

According to Variety, the threequel — the first draft script for which Midler called “brilliant” in late 2025 — Disney is considering a theatrical release for the project “given the audience’s clear investment in the beloved franchise.”

After years in development, Hocus Pocus 3 is moving forward at Disney with all three of the Sanderson Sisters returning! Stay tuned to AllEars for more updates on the project.
