When most people plan a trip with the Disney Cruise Line, they brace themselves for the obvious high prices and luxurious splurges like port excursions, souvenirs, and maybe a fancy dinner or two.

Lately, we’ve noticed a different kind of spending creeping up on Disney cruisers — and it’s taking some sailors by surprise. We’re talkin’ about onboard experiences and the costs that you might not fully consider before you indulge.
Now, don’t get us wrong — one of the things that makes Disney cruises so beloved is how much is included in the price. Rotational dining, Broadway-style shows, character meet-and-greets, soft drinks, and a ton of activities are already included in the fare. But some updated experiences across the fleet also include some impulse costs that can add up quickly.

One of the biggest culprits lately is the explosion of themed lounges across Disney ships. These spaces are gorgeous, immersive, and often feel like mini-attractions themselves.

Each one comes with its own menu of specialty drinks — many of which you won’t find anywhere else on the ship.

The problem? They’re really easy to collect. You might start with a themed cocktail on the first night. Then you discover another lounge with a menu you love even more. Before long, you’re trying a drink in every spot just to experience the atmosphere.

If you had a drink package, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. But the Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer traditional alcoholic drink packages like many other cruise lines. So every specialty drink is an individual purchase — and they ain’t cheap!

If only they did a loyalty card where you buy 10 and get the 11th free… Alas, that bar tab can grow faster than you expect.

Another surprisingly easy splurge? The onboard beverage classes and tastings.

Disney does a fantastic job with all sorts of wine and champagne tastings, whiskey seminars, and mixology classes. They’re hosted by knowledgeable Cast Members (often sommeliers) in a relaxed and social setting where you typically get to try several different drinks while learning something new.

The problem is that these aren’t free, and once you do one, you start noticing all the others on the schedule. Individually, they’re not outrageous — but stack two or three across a cruise, and it quickly becomes another unexpected dent in your vacation budget.

And then there’s the classic splurge that longtime cruisers will recognize immediately: Palo Brunch.

If you’ve cruised with Disney before, you probably already know where this is going. For many repeat cruisers, Palo Brunch has become a must-do on every single sailing. The restaurant offers an upscale dining experience, beautiful ocean views, and service that feels extra special compared to the main dining rooms.

But the real star is the brunch itself. We’re talking made-to-order dishes, incredible pastries, seafood options, and desserts that keep you coming back for more. It’s one of the best meals you’ll have on the ship.

And once you try it, skipping it on future cruises feels almost impossible.

None of this is a complaint, of course. These extras are part of what makes a Disney cruise feel so memorable. But splurging does create a new kind of cruise math. The base cruise fare still includes a ton, yet the growing list of tempting experiences means many guests are spending more on onboard experiences than they originally expected. The good news is that with a little bit of self-restraint or extra budgeting, you don’t have to be beaten down by these costs.
