Following Disney’s landmark decision to have the live action remake of Mulan be released straight on Disney+ and skip its theatrical release, folks have wondered if other upcoming Disney films would face a similar fate. With major movie chains like Regal choosing to re-close all of their domestic theaters, the odds of a successful theatrical release of any kind in 2020 has certainly diminished.

We can now confirm that Disney and Pixar’s next major release will also skip its theatrical release and instead head straight to the streaming service.
Soul, which was originally scheduled to be released earlier this year, and subsequently delayed once to November, will now premiere on Disney+ on Christmas Day, December 25th.

According to Variety, international markets where Disney+ is not available will be able to watch Soul in theaters at a later date which has yet to be determined. Variety also noted that unlike Mulan, which cost subscribers an additional $30 to view, Soul will be released at no extra cost to active subscribers.

Walt Diseny Company CEO Bob Chapek said in a statement, “We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.”

This is the second time now that Disney has opted to skip a major theatrical release and instead move straight to Disney+. This is a developing story and we will bring you additional information as we learn more!
