Those of us in the United States have been glued to our televisions since Disney+ launched in November 2019. And now, Europe and the U.K. get to join in on the fun as well!

With all of the Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and “mouse-ellaneous” content our heart desires, we love Disney+! And now that the streaming service has officially launched in Europe and the U.K., it’s safe to say there are a ton of superfans there as well.
On March 24th, Disney+ launched in the U.K., Ireland, Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. According to Variety and App Annie, the Disney+ app was downloaded a total of 5 million times between those seven nations on launch day. That’s quite a premiere!

But, while the number of app downloads is impressive, it doesn’t directly translate to new subscribers. Keep in mind that Disney+ subscribers can download and install the app multiples times on different devices. Each individual account can have up to seven profiles and can have four simultaneous streams. Also, the data provided by App Annie only covers mobile apps, so neither connected-TV apps nor access to the Disney+ website was counted.

Regardless, the strong launch is a good sign for Disney. It likely reflects both the pent up demand for the service, as well as the need for at-home entertainment as countries across the globe face life at home.

This strong showing in Europe also tracks with the success Disney+ saw with its initial launch in November 2019. The streaming service was first made available in the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. According to Disney, as of February 3rd, they had a total of 28.6 million subscribers to the streaming service.

The strong performance of Disney+ has it ranked as the 7th non-gaming app in terms of consumer spending year-to-date. But, the solid launch in Europe may push it higher up the list.

The content lineup for the U.K. and Europe is similar to the U.S.. Subscribers have access to over 500 films, about 350 series, and a slate of 26 originals, including The Mandalorian.
Disney launched the streaming service with lower quality videos in the U.K. and Europe, to reduce bandwidth usage during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Disney+ still has more markets to look forward to as well. The service is scheduled to launch in France on April 7th!
We definitely see a lot of Disney+ marathons in our future. We’re glad that millions more people can now enjoy the awesome content with us!
