A new exhibit, “Inside the Walt Disney Archives: 50 Years of Preserving the Magic“, has recently opened at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, CA. In conjunction with this, the museum is also offering a number of culinary events and offerings that fit the retro-Disney theme the exhibition executes so well.

The Museum’s resident restaurant, Tangata, is a Patina-run property (like Tortilla Jo’s, Naples Ristorante, Catal, and Uva Bar in Downtown Disney) which will be providing the food for the several different refreshment options available to exhibition attendees.
The first is “Tea on the Terrace“, a traditional tea service held in the Bowers Museum courtyard, whose price is included with admission into the Archives exhibit.

The menu includes a selection of teas, as well as a variety of scones, petit sandwiches, and desserts served with all the elegance one would expect from an afternoon tea.

Of the sampling that we were given, the menu seemed like fairly traditional tea service offerings–the scones were particularly good and freshly made, with both sweet and savory options.

Tea is served twice a day Friday through Sunday. More information can be found and reservations can be made online by clicking here.
For those looking for a slightly more hearty meal, Tangata also offers lunch every day, with dishes inspired by Walt Disney’s favorite dishes such as beet salad, chili & beans, and apple pie a la mode.

Many of these items were taken from Marcy Carriker Smother’s extensively researched book Eat Like Walt, and then slightly modified by Stefano Ciociola, Tangata’s Executive Chef, to better appeal to a contemporary palate. Of the tastings we tried, I thought the beet salad was a particular standout, as not only did the goat cheese crema make a nice pairing with the mildly astringent beets, but they were also served in a cup designed to resemble a can, from where many of Walt’s favorite foods typically came.

Lunch reservations and more of the menu can be found by clicking here.
The main event for gourmets and Walt aficionados alike is the “Eat Like Walt” Dinner Celebration on March 21st, which will feature recipes and stories presented by Marcy Carriker Smothers. The evening will consist of a keynote presentation by Smothers, a Scotch Mist (Walt’s favorite drink) toast, and a meal where each course is paired with Walt anecdotes. Chef Oscar Martinez, the longest tenured employee at Disneyland Resort from the Carnation Cafe, is also scheduled to attend.
Smothers was kind enough to give us a brief tour of some of the dishes that will be available both at lunch and at the dinner, and provide an overview of the “Eat Like Walt” dining concept.
The “Eat Like Walt” dinner celebration is March 21st, 2020 at 5pm. Tickets are $195 for general guests, and $175 for museum members. More information and ticket sales can be found here.
