United Airlines has now raised its checked bag prices, becoming the second airline carrier to do so in the past week. The raising of the price for checked bags is to combat the rising gas prices, according to CNBC.

United Airlines will now charge an additional $10 per checked bag. This now makes the price $45 to check the first bag on most domestic itineraries if paid in advance. If you’re paying at the airport, the cost will now be $50.

The changes began on April 3rd and are for flights in the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. This is the second time in two years that United has raised its bag prices, as the first time was back in February 2024.

JetBlue was the other airline to increase checked bag prices, which upped its prices to at least $4 per bag, and as high as $9 per bag, depending on when they add it on.

There are some ways to avoid extra bag fees, like airline credit cards, which provide passengers a free checked bag when flying domestically, and elite frequent fliers also often get free bags. In the airline’s statement for this price increase, United said, “United Chase credit card holders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members, and customers traveling in premium cabins can still check a bag for free, and customers in most markets will still enjoy a $5 discount if they prepay for their bags online 24 hours before their flight.”
