The film award season has begun with the Golden Globe nominations, which happened on December 8th, and Disney is already crushing it! From big box office hits to movies that haven’t even been released yet, let’s take a look at how Disney has started the award season.

Award season for films includes the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and other notable award ceremonies. Nominations typically occur around the end of the year and the start of the new year, with some ceremonies taking place at the beginning of the new year. The Golden Globe nominations kicked off the award season, which happened on December 8th.

Every year, a few Disney movies get recognized for achievements in multiple categories — costume, animation, box office, you name it. It’s no different this year, as The Walt Disney Company has gotten a total of 27 Golden Globe nominations!

No matter the award ceremony, it seems like Disney is always in play for the animation award. This year, both Elio and Zootopia 2 have been nominated for “Best Motion Picture – Animated” for the Golden Globes.

Although the movie isn’t considered the strongest in Pixar’s vast library (it’s challenging when almost every movie is exceptional), Elio is getting some love, and deservedly so. The movie still has Rotten Tomatoes scores of 83% for critics and 89% for the audience. Will it win? Only time will tell. However, in our opinion, we don’t see it beating its competition within the same company.

Which leads us to Zootopia 2, which has been a MASSIVE hit so far. This nomination doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone. The movie debuted with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% for critics and 96% for the audience. Some fans are claiming that the sequel is better than the first movie, which went on to win many awards, including the best animated movie award for the Oscars and the Golden Globes.

On top of that, the movie set records with its opening weekend box office. The movie made $156-$158 million domestically and $556-$560 million globally — making it the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated film and the second-biggest Thanksgiving opening in U.S. history. China contributed $270 million alone, making it the second-highest box office opening in the country behind Avengers: Endgame.

The movie’s box office success led to another Golden Globe nomination — Best Cinematic and Box Office AchievementZootopia 2 could seriously win this award due to the numbers it put up. That’s not the only Disney movie nominated for this award. No, it’s not Thunderbolts* or Fantastic Four: First Steps. It’s a movie that hasn’t even been released yet. Yes, we’re talking about Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Avatar: Fire and Ash got nominated for the Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement as well. If you’re wondering how the movie can get nominated for a box office award, without having any box office numbers yet, it’s because films released at the end of the year qualify based on projected high box office earnings.

Both Avatar and Avatar: Way of Water ended up making over a billion dollars in total box office earnings, and it’s safe to assume that this third installment in the franchise will put up crazy numbers. The movie releases on December 19th, and you’re not going to want to miss this epic film!
