REVIEW: Y’all. You Haven’t Lived Until You’ve Had Fried Chicken at Disney’s Homecomin’

Y’all, I know Southern food. I have a ranking of the best grits at Disney World in my phone, and my heart flutters when I see pimento cheese on the menu. So you can trust me when I say this Disney Springs restaurant will always have a special place in my heart — well, the southern portion of my heart.

Homecomin’

We headed to Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ to dive into some new Southern eats. We might be in Florida, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the classics!

Starting off, we tried The Honey Bee for $16. This fun drink came in during the Flavors of Florida festival and is made with Tom Cat Gin, honey syrup, and fresh-squeezed lemon, and topped with a house-made honey foam.

The Honey Bee

If you’re a fan of honey, this drink needs to be added to your list. It reminded us of a whisky sour, but it is made with gin and has a huge chunk of honeycomb in it. Parts of the honeycomb can come off in the drink, which can create a waxy consistency, but if you’re someone who enjoys honey by the spoonful (guilty), you’ll enjoy eating the honey out of the honeycomb and sipping on this strong drink throughout your meal.

Then we had the White Peach Sangria for $16. This is made with Peach moonshine, La Perlina Moscato, and fresh peach puree muddled with orange and mango, garnished with a moonshine-soaked peach wedge.

White Peach Sangria

This is not your typical sangria! If you’re used to traditional flavors, this might be a little different. We loved how the peaches were soaked in that moonshine before being put in the drink, and overall, we really enjoyed it, but it wasn’t our all-time favorite drink we’ve had here.

For our first appetizer, we have the Church Lady Deviled Eggs for $14, which are Southern-style deviled eggs.

Church Lady Deviled Eggs

The Church Lady Deviled Eggs are one of our favorites every time we visit. There’s a great tang to the filling, which was super creamy, and we loved that there weren’t any extra ingredients in the mix — just mustard, mayo, and egg yolk. They had a great texture, and a crispy, chewy square of bacon on top added some fun to the eggs! It was topped with paprika just as deviled eggs should be.

We love that it’s topped with bacon

After that, we tried the Thigh High Chicken Biscuits, which cost $20. This is three biscuits topped with Chef Art’s famous fried chicken thighs and bread and butter pickles, all drizzled with hot honey.

Thigh High Chicken Biscuits

For these, you can choose between white or dark meat, and we went with the white. In the past, we’ve tried it with white meat and enjoyed it a little better, but we loved how these are big enough for an entree or to easily share across the table. The pickles were thin and perfect for those who love pickles on fried chicken sandwiches.

So much honey!

We also tried the Bunch of Puppies for $15. These are house-made hushpuppies served with pimento cheese and red jalapeno jelly.

Bunch of Puppies

These hushpuppies were so fun! They’re crispy on the outside with that beautiful brown color, and the inside is soft and chewy. There’s a little bit of pepper on the inside, creating a small heat that doesn’t linger, and it is served with pimento cheese and jalapeno jelly. The pimento cheese was super creamy, with a really strong pimento flavor, while the jalapeno jelly had a nice kick of heat that stays in the front of your mouth and doesn’t linger too long.

Crisp to perfection

We followed it up with Meatloaf Main Plate for $30, which is house-made meatloaf served with creamy mashed potatoes, Southern green beans, and a cheddar drop biscuit.

Meatloaf Main Plate

This meatloaf is perfect for those who love the classics. It’s a very traditional meatloaf, and if you have picky eaters, this will likely be their favorite. It has ketchup on the outside and even comes with a chunkier sauce on the side for more flavors. You can upgrade to bacon and cheese on your mashed potatoes, but we stuck with the familiar to match the meatloaf. We loved eating the two classics together and feeling like we’re back home, eating mom’s meatloaf. We probably wouldn’t pick it over any of the famous chicken dishes on the menu, but it was fun to try something new.

Digging in

We ended our night by having the Smothered Chicken for $32. The Smothered Chicken is Chef Art’s famous fried chicken thigh, topped with creamy mashed potatoes and sautéed broccolini, smothered in house-made onion gravy, and finished with crispy bacon.

Smothered Chicken

At first sight, all we could think was, “This is HUGE!” This entree is big enough to share with two or three (and possibly 4) other people or have leftovers for the whole week. It’s country style and you can choose between light or dark meat. We went with the light and, like always, we love the chicken dishes at Homecomin’. Fried chicken lovers, you haven’t lived until you’ve tried it here. We also liked the mashed potatoes, which were super creamy, and the onion gravy on the side of the chicken.

Dipping the biscuits in, of course

Did this convince you to book a reservation at Homecomin’? I sure hope so because you’ll probably see me at the table next to you, digging into fried chicken and deviled eggs. Make sure you keep following AllEars for food reviews you need to know for your next Disney World trip.
