One of the largest passenger carriers at Orlando International Airport is cutting its workforce.
Spirit Airlines has faced a tough year financially. In August, the budget airline filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year. Since then, it has made several cost-cutting measures, including ending service to a dozen cities. And soon, more Spirit Airlines cuts are set to impact Orlando.
Earlier this week, Spirit Airlines announced that it will soon furlough 1,800 employees nationwide, including hundreds of Orlando-based employees.
According to a notice the carrier provided to the state, 350 Spirit flight attendants based at Orlando International Airport will be furloughed beginning December 1st. The notice states that the furlough is expected to be temporary, although the company is unsure what the duration will be.
The Orlando workforce will receive the largest number of furloughs, but other Florida airports will be impacted as well. Spirit also plans to furlough 309 flight attendants at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and 71 flight attendants at Miami International Airport.
Spirit Airlines has been a major presence at the Orlando Airport. In 2024, it served more than 7.83 million passengers there, making it the second-busiest carrier at the airport, with a 13.69% market share. This placed Spirit of Delta Air Lines’ 13.01% share in 2024.

I have flown Spirit instead of Southwest for the last two years and find the airline up to par with others. The staff are very accommodating the seats are a little smaller but the prices are great. Hope they make it. Good luck Spirit.
