NEWS: Disney Stock Falls Following Trump Movie Tariff Announcement

Disney’s stock has seen a significant fall since President Trump’s recent tariff announcements.

Disney, along with several other production companies, including Netflix, Paramount, and WBD, saw these drops after the President threatened to impose 100% tariffs on foreign-produced films.

When the U.S. stock market opened on Monday, May 5th, Disney’s stock had fallen 2.4% according to Variety. This drop comes after President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on foreign films on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The President explained that he plans to authorize the Commerce Department and the U.S. Trade Representative to “immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.” These comments came after he claimed that other countries are offering incentives for filmmakers and studios to film outside of the U.S., which represents “a national security threat.”

This is the first time the President’s tariff initiatives could impact intellectual property rather than just physical products. It is unclear how these tariffs will be defined, how they will impact films already made before the announcement, and if they will extend to TV production as well. 

This isn’t the only area that the President’s tariffs could impact the Disney Company. We have also seen how these new increases could drive up prices on Disney World souvenirs, food, and more. Disney, along with several other production companies, shoots many of its films in the U.K., France, Germany, Hungary, and Canada, along with the U.S.

One of Disney and Marvel’s upcoming films, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, was filmed in London, England.
