Did Rachel Zegler Sue Disney?

Disney’s new live-action Snow White remake is no stranger to controversy — starting well before the film even headed to the cutting room floor.

It wasn’t long before the online commentary started, with people disagreeing with the casting of Rachel Zegler, a Latina actress, as the titular character who has skin “as white as snow.” In addition, the film came under fire from actor Peter Dinklage about its portrayal of the Seven Dwarfs. Now, many are blaming Zegler for Snow White’s poor reception — but is Rachel Zegler suing Disney over it?

Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White came out on March 21st and has not been well-received by critics despite topping the box office charts in North America. But, any rumors about her suing Disney seem to be just that. Many on social media have been quick to point their finger at the film’s star, Rachel Zegler, for allegedly hurting the film’s promotional campaign with “her personal politics.”

This includes Jonah Platt, the son of Marc Platt — producer of Snow White. He admonished Zegler in a social media post before deleting it — but not before it was screenshotted by multiple media outlets.

Platt said the actress’ actions “clearly hurt the film’s box office.”

He is likely referring to Zegler’s comments throughout the promotion of the movie, which have often been political. Last summer, after the film’s trailer was released, Zegler thanked fans for their positive response on X/Twitter and added, “and always remember, free Palestine.”

It was then, according to Variety, that Marc Platt flew to New York to speak to Zegler about the comments.

Film critic Conor Riley noted that Gal Gadot, who plays the Evil Queen in the movie, has also faced backlash from people over her support for Israel. Gadot, who is Israeli, did not receive a cross-country visit from Platt to speak to her about her political comments, however.

Zegler also came under fire for saying that the original Snow White film was “extremely dated when it comes to the ideas of women being in roles of power,” adding, “People are making these jokes about ours being the PC Snow White, where it’s like, yeah, it is – because it needed that.” Many saw this as a rebuke against Disney tradition.

Riley noted the film’s timing didn’t help. “Ultimately, [Zegler] became a lightning rod for controversy, not just due to her own actions, but because Snow White landed at the intersection of Hollywood’s creative stagnation, racial politics, international conflict, and America’s deep ideological divide,” he said.

As far as suing Disney is concerned, that appears to just be internet fodder likely perpetuated by the same people who were upset that Zegler was cast in the first place.
