There are tons of perks to staying at a Disney World Hotel.

If you’re staying at a value resort, you may love the over-the-top theming, or you may love the Extended Evening Hours you get at Deluxe hotels (and the Early Entry you get at any Disney World hotel!). Another perk to staying on property is getting the opportunity to purchase a Refillable Resort Mug. We’re here to warn you though that there are some situations where buying a refillable mug is NOT the move.
A Resort Refillable Mug is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s fantastic for many families and travelers! They’re available for a flat fee of $21.99 for your entire resort stay up to 14 days. You can refill it at any drink refill station at your hotel with whatever drink you’d like, as many times as you’d like!

And that’s where the first problem comes in: If you’re not spending a lot of time at your hotel, then there’s really no use in getting the mug. This is because it cannot be refilled for free at the drink stations in the Disney World parks.

Now, if you’re planning to visit your hotel in the middle of the day to rest and also refill, then that’s a different story, but many families who are experiencing the parks for shorter vacations want to be in the parks as much as possible. So midday trips back to the hotel may not be in the plans (although you should still rest in the middle of the day though — there are plenty of indoor attractions and shows we recommend for this!).

The other issue comes in if you’re not really someone who drinks anything other than water. Your refillable mug can be used for all sodas, Powerade, etc., and yes, water is one of those drinks, but you could also just ask for a free cup of water and use it to fill up your personal water bottle from home.

Then, once you’re in the parks, you can stop by quick service locations to ask for free cups of ice water to refill your bottle for no charge.

If you’re planning at least one resort day, however, and you know your family is big on drinking sodas and non-water drinks, then this could be a great choice for you! To calculate how much you’d be spending on sodas otherwise, see how many sodas your family drinks at home the same number of days your trip will be, and act as if each one costs $3-$4. If it’s over $21.99, then getting the mug is a good deal!

Have you ever bought a resort refillable mug? Tell us in the comments!
We do some resort-hopping while we’re in Disney (we go every year, at least a couple of times) and will often walk to a resort close to a park (e.g., Yacht or Beach Club, Boardwalk, etc.) to refill our mugs.
It works out good if you drink coffee.
