If a Disney World Hotel Is Under Construction, Should They Lower The Prices?

Planning on staying at a Disney World hotel during your next vacation? You might encounter some problems!

We’ve shared our thoughts in the past about Disney World’s loudest hotels, the hotels with the most complicated transportation, and the hotels with the worst food. But there’s one problem that arises above the rest — construction! It can be downright miserable to stay at a hotel when it’s getting a refurbishment.

We recently reached out to our followers on Facebook to ask them an important question: “If a Disney World resort hotel is under construction, do you think Disney should lower the prices temporarily to stay there?”

If a Disney World resort hotel is under construction, do you think Disney should lower the prices temporarily to stay there?

We got quite a few responses on this one, and most of them were in agreement…so let’s talk about it!

Port Orleans – French Quarter

Nearly everyone in the comments answered “yes” to the question, but some people did add caveats to their “yes.” Perhaps the most common response is that Disney SHOULD lower the cost of your stay IF the construction at the resort will impact the quality of it.

Wilderness Lodge Lobby

If you’re just seeing some construction equipment around during the daytime or scaffolding on the buildings, it’s not as big of a deal. Even with room refurbishments, you can sometimes make it through your stay without noticing that they’re happening if they’re going on in other parts of the resort. But if the construction inhibits your ability to enjoy your stay, it might be worth some compensation.

Pop Century

For instance, if the construction projects happening impact important amenities like the main quick service dining location/food court, the lobby, the main pool, etc., it might be frustrating to pay full price for your stay. Typically, these refurbishments are listed on the Disney World website ahead of time (and on the resort hotel pages), but sometimes the full extent of the construction is not stated.

Yacht Club

That’s when staying at a hotel under construction can be the most frustrating — you know that there’s some work being done on the resort but you arrive to find that the lobby is closed, the food options are limited, and there’s lots of noise outside your window. At that point, it sometimes makes the hotel stay a little bit miserable. That reason is exactly why we like to keep a close eye on hotel construction and update our readers — so that you’re prepared before your visit, even if Disney doesn’t give you a full warning.

Ultimately, even if Disney did decide to give discounts when the hotel was under construction (a few of our followers had experienced this on rare occasions in the distant past), it would be challenging to find where to draw the line. It would start with hotel room discounts for construction, but what’s to stop Disney fans from demanding ticket discounts when a ride is closed for refurbishment or a section of the theme park is closed off?

Animal Kingdom

Because Disney DOES place those construction warnings on the website, it typically means they don’t have to give you compensation for ongoing projects at the hotels. So our best advice to you is to do your research beforehand — check our construction updates to see if you can handle the refurbishment during your visit. If not, maybe save that hotel for another time!

So there you have it — it’s a complicated argument! Make sure to dig in to your hotel before you stay there and you’ll likely save yourself some hassle.
