You don’t need Spidey senses to know that Spider-Man: No Way Home is a cultural phenomenon.

The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man chronicles was one of the most anticipated movies of 2021, and it has the numbers to prove it. It had the 2nd best opening day and opening weekend of all time, right behind another Marvel blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, and it recently surpassed Titanic, Jurassic World, and The Lion King to become the 6th highest grossing movie of all time. Marvel fans will tell you that this movie is nothing short of historic, and it’s accomplishments don’t stop there.
***Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home ahead***
Spider-Man: No Way Home had one of the most dramatic and epic reveals in Marvel’s history when Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprised their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Joining them were Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius/Doc Ock, as well as other Spider-Man villains from across all three franchises.

Tobey Maguire and Willem Dafoe first appeared as Peter Parker and Norman Osborn respectfully in 2002 in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. With their reprisal of these roles almost 20 years later (19 years and 225 days to be exact) they broke the Guinness World Record for longest careers as live action Marvel characters, dethroning Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (16 years and 232 days).

When it comes to the MCU specifically, Jon Favreau is the longest tenured actor with his first appearance as Happy Hogan in 2008’s Iron Man, and his most recent role being in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Samuel L. Jackson is set to beat Favreau’s record with Marvel’s Secret Invasion, which will hit Disney+ this year.

Some fans still regard Tobey’s Peter Parker as the best one, and his mark on the superhero movie franchise as a whole cannot be understated. Additionally, Willem Dafoe’s consistently creepy portrayals of the Green Goblin have kept audiences at the edge of their seats for years. Maguire and Dafoe’s Spider-Man careers deserve celebration, and this record is a great marker of their impact.
