Seems like the friendly, neighborhood Spider-Man is having a nationwide impact!
Spider-Man: No Way Home was one of the most anticipated releases of 2021, and the Spidey fans showed up at the theater this weekend. The third installment of the Tom Holland led Spider-Man movies opened on December 17th, and has blown out the box office.
Spider-Man: No Way Home officially has the second best opening day of all time with a $121 million box office debut! Deadline reports that the only film it trails is another Marvel juggernaut, Avengers: Endgame, which had a $157.4 million opening day.
While it comes in at second of all time, No Way Home has the highest grossing opening day ever for the month of December, and is estimated to make between $242 millon and $247.5 million over the opening weekend. EntTelligence counts that 9.2 million people have seen the Spidey blockbuster so far.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is also the highest rated live-action Spider-Man movie, earning an A+ Cinema Score. It’s only the second Marvel/Sony film to rank that high after 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse, which also received an A+. Not only is this movie commanding the box office, but it’s living up to all the hype!
AMC Burbank in California and AMC Empire in New York City both grossed over $300K on opening day, and 90% of this weekend’s ticket sales have all been for Spider-Man! Way to close out the year with a bang!
If you weren’t excited enough about the new film, Kevin Feige (the Marvel Studios President) confirmed that Marvel and Sony are already developing Spider-Man’s future, according to the New York Times! In an interview, Feige said “Yes, we’re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don’t want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after Far From Home.” How exciting!
