NEWS: Disney Will Adapt ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee’ Musical into a Film!

Film versions of Broadway musicals have been on the rise recently with Hamilton‘s pro-shot coming to Disney+ and adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen, West Side Story, and In the Heights arriving in theaters soon.

And, yet ANOTHER show will be added to the list of musical films that you’ll want to watch over and over again.

Disney’s on a roll with these Broadway musicals! Dare we say it’s pandemonium? The next show making its debut will be The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as Disney creates a film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical!

Broadway World has reported that Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, the producers of the live-action Aladdin film, will produce the film with Ryan Halprin as the executive producer. The rest of the creative team will be announced at a later date.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee surrounds a spelling bee at Putnam Valley Middle School where six unique adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three interesting grown-ups. The musical comedy is made by Rebecca Feldman with additional material by Jay Reiss, music and lyrics by William Finn, and a book by Rachel Sheinkin.

During the 2005 Broadway production that was directed by James Lapine, the show ran for 1,136 performances, earned 6 Tony nominations, and won 2 of those nominations for Best Book of a Musical and Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
