It has been nearly nine months since the Disneyland Resort first closed its parks and hotels. Since then, the Downtown Disney District has reopened its shopping and dining, which now includes an extension into Buena Vista Street, having officially reopened on November 19th.

While its gradual reopening is set to continue on December 6th with the reopening of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, the prolonged closure of both theme parks has forced Disney to continue its furloughing of Cast Members.
Orange County Register has reported that Disneyland will issue an additional 1,797 furlough notices to both union and non-union employees. These furloughs began to go into effect on November 23rd and will continue through February 21st.

The latest round of furloughs have impacted a number of departments at the Disneyland Resort. Furloughed employees include “landscapers, engineers, painters, plasterers and custodians as well as employees working in entertainment, restaurants and attraction.” In addition to these, eighteen Disneyland firefighters have also received furlough notices.

The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) Act notification filed by Disney included the following statement: “We have provided impacted employees as much notice as practicable under the circumstances, as we had to act quickly after the state recently announced its unexpected reopening restrictions, which now make clear that we cannot reopen Disneyland Resort in the foreseeable future.”

The state of California announced in October the highly anticipated reopening guidance for theme parks, which states that larger parks like Disney cannot open until its county reaches the least restrictive Yellow Tier. This likely means that the Disneyland Resort will not reopen until at least early 2021 or possibly summer 2021.

This is so sad. I was hoping Newsom would let DL and CA reopen like WDW has done, but I feel like the recent spike has made that all but impossible. Fingers crossed for 2021…
