NEWS: Disney+ Now Has Over 73 Million Paid Subscribers!

Disney+ launched a year ago, and since then, subscribers all over the world have continued to sign on to watch classic Disney movies, as well as original programming, such as the hit Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

And although Disney reached a milestone of over 50 million subscribers earlier in the year, the number grew to 60.5 million by August.

The sky’s the limit, though, for the streaming subscription service because according to the Walt Disney Company’s recent Quarter 4 Earnings report, in just two months, that number has gone up again to approximately 73.7 million subscribers.

In their quarterly report, the Walt Disney Company shared, “The real bright spot has been our direct-to-consumer business, which is key to the future of our company, and on this anniversary of the launch of Disney+ we’re pleased to report that, as of the end of the fourth quarter, the service had more than 73 million paid subscribers – far surpassing our expectations in just its first year.”

Disney has embraced digital streaming for some of its biggest movie releases, too. When the global health crisis postponed the release of the live-action Mulan movie, the company decided to release it to Disney+ for a premium add-on charge.

Other movies originally intended for theatrical release this year, such as Pixar’s Soul, are bypassing theaters altogether and going straight to the service.

Disney recently announced a major reorganization that will make its streaming platform its priority. With 73 million subscribers on its Disney+ platform alone, it seems the company is well-prepared to face its streaming-focused future.
