Despite Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure preparing to reopen as an extension of Downtown Disney, the two theme parks at the Disneyland Resort are unable to reopen at this time. Under the recently released theme park guidelines, Disneyland cannot reopen until Orange County has significant decreased its positivity rate and rate of new virus cases.

Amidst all the uncertainty as to when the theme parks can reopen, Orange County Register has reported that additional furloughs are coming to the resort.
These furloughs will impact executive, salaried and hourly Cast Members, according to a letter sent from Disneyland President Ken Potrock. This announcement follows the recent announcement that 28,000 Cast Members would be laid off across Disney’s Parks, Experiences, and Products division.

In the letter, Potrock states that “we find ourselves in the untenable situation of having to institute additional furloughs for our executive, salaried and hourly cast.”

The letter continues on to say, “We expected to be able to open our parks in Anaheim, given our proven ability to operate with responsible health and safety protocols as we have in all of our other theme parks around the world, but unfortunately this has not been the case.”

Disneyland has been pushing to be able to reopen for some time, but their efforts have not resulted in good news thus far. The state of California has stated in the past that there is “no hurry” to reopen theme parks, a sentiment that has been widely criticized by theme park industry leaders as well as local leaders.

Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu responded to the state’s theme park guidance, saying that “too many Anaheim hotels, stores, and restaurants will not survive” if Disneyland cannot reopen in a timely manner. We’ll continue to monitor the news coming out of Disneyland and Southern California!
