Epic Universe is finally open, and it’s everything we hoped it would be — jaw-dropping rides, immersive lands, and theming that pulls you into whole new worlds. But it’s also brand new, which means a lot of guests are learning the hard way what not to do.

I’m a journalist in my 17th year of covering theme parks, and I’ve already seen people making mistakes that mess up their day at Epic Universe. And honestly? I feel so, so bad for them. Don’t let that be you — here are the mistakes you’ll want to avoid.
1. Treating Universal’s Refillable Mugs Like Disney’s
Disney fans, bless them. They walk into Universal thinking the refillable mug system is the same as what they know — except here it’s actually a better deal. These mugs work inside the parks for unlimited refills after activation, not just at your hotel.

And as a diet soda addict, I need you to understand that you’re getting unlimited Coke Freestyle refills ALL DAY! You’ll find the machines both inside the quick service restaurants and at food service stands. And they’re themed to the lands!

I saw one poor dad drop $20 on bottled sodas because he didn’t understand. I almost wanted to hand him mine and say, “Buddy, you’ve been through enough.”

2. Booking Table Service When Quick Service Will Do
Listen, if you want to sit for an hour and pay more, go for it. But Epic Universe’s quick service is genuinely solid — way better than chicken fingers and fries. We’re talking nutella-banana crepes in the Wizarding World, and grilled salmon with lemon-dill sauce in Isle of Berk.

Plus you mobile order at your table and then bring your food out to you – no standing in line, no waiting at a mobile order window. That’s why we call it “Quable Service.”

Meanwhile, people were losing precious time on rides to sit down and order a salad. Don’t waste your day waiting on a check when you could be riding Mario Kart.

3. Waiting for Ministry of Magic Lines to Drop
The phrase “we’ll come back later” should be banned at Epic Universe. Guests were convinced that if they just waited until evening, Ministry of Magic would calm down. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

Universal literally closes the line early so you can’t sneak in last minute. I watched one couple speed-walk over at dusk, only to find the ride shut. Brutal.

4. Not Having a Rain Plan
Rainy season in Florida is basically a lifestyle, not an event. And Epic Universe? Not exactly bursting with covered spaces. When the sky opened up, people huddled under random awnings looking like sad, soggy churros.

Pro tip: if your only plan for rain is “keep riding,” you’re going to be wet, cranky, and waiting in a line that smells faintly of wet socks.

5. Underestimating the Layout
I never used to grab a park map. And then Epic Universe humbled me. It’s sprawling and not as intuitive as you think. Once you get the layout – and understand that there’s no way to get from portal to portal without going back to the middle, you’ll be fine.

But I saw plenty of people doing that slow, confused spin in the middle of a pathway, muttering “wait…where’s Berk again?” Learn from us: grab the map the first time.

6. Assuming Little Kids Can Do Everything
If you’re bringing young kids, check the height requirements before you hype them up. Don’t set yourself up for that moment when your kid is crushed.

You can find all the height requirements here.

7. Rolling Up Late to the Shows
Pro tip: the shows aren’t “walk up five minutes before and grab a seat.” Nope. They fill 10–15 minutes early, and I watched whole families turned away at the door. So plan ahead for them.

I especially recommend “The Untrainable Dragon.” It’s a must-do for me!

8. Buying a Power-Up Band (or Wand) and Barely Using It
These interactive toys are tempting. But here’s the reality: by mid-day, every touchpoint in Nintendo World is mobbed with kids. Watching other families spend $40 each for something they tapped once was painful.

Think about how much time you’ll really have before you buy.

Final Thoughts
Epic Universe is incredible, but it’s also overwhelming if you go in blind. The people I feel bad for weren’t unlucky — they just didn’t know what they were walking into. Plan for the weather, manage your time, check the requirements, and for the love of churros, don’t assume you can wing it. Do that, and your trip will be as epic as the park’s name promises.
