Not every Disney World va2cation that is planned gets taken, and that’s sometimes a very conscious choice made by the people planning them.

Folks cancel their Disney trips for a variety of reasons, and we’re curious — which reasons are most prevalent these days? Is it pricing? Scheduling? Or some other problem we’re not considering? We reached out to our readers to find out.
We reached out to our followers on Facebook and asked, “Have you ever cancelled a Disney World trip suddenly? Why?” We got quite a few comments, and some of the answers were surprising.
Let’s dive into the responses.
Family Emergencies
One of the most common reasons our readers shared for canceling trips was due to family emergencies. Multiple readers said they’d had to cancel trips for deaths in the family. Wendy said, “Yes! 2 actually. We had family emergencies and someone passing away. Life goes on and you can always schedule more trips! I love my trips! But…family is always first!”

Deaths aren’t the only time people have family circumstances change their travel plans. Joanna told us, “Yes, my hubby got deployment orders so we had a family reunion instead before he left.”

Sickness & Injury
Another one that was pretty common? Last-minute sickness or injuries! Melissa said, “Woke up with covid the day before we were leaving but in my defense I had JUST gotten home from Disney 6 days prior.” Well, Melissa, we’re glad you got to enjoy one trip at least!

Helen commented, “Yes. February, 2004. My husband broke his ankle a few days before we were to go.” Broken limbs can definitely put a damper on a trip, considering you do a LOT of walking in Disney World. Sometimes it’s just better to reschedule in those cases.

COVID
Many Disney fans had trips canceled due to the pandemic in 2020. Joslyn said, “I didn’t cancel it, Disney canceled it for me by closing for Covid.” Kelly also noted, “Yes because of Covid — it worked out for the best because we ended up being moved (upgraded actually) to the Grand Floridian due to construction going on at Contemporary.”

During the pandemic, Disney World was closed for a few months, then had a phased reopening. Everything shut down in March, then Disney Springs reopened in May, Resorts started reopening in June, and the parks reopened in July. Some hotels remained closed for many months, and reservations at those spots were canceled or moved.

Hurricanes
Florida is prone to hurricanes during certain months of the year, and there have been several storms large enough to cause Disney World closures in the past. Diane said, “Not by choice but there was a hurricane and we had to reschedule.”

Melissa also commented, “Rebooked due to a hurricane,” so as you can see, this one’s fairly common. If you’re planning to travel during hurricane season, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the weather leading up to your trip and be ready to pivot if needed.
When Is Hurricane Season at Disney World in 2026?
Those were the four most common reasons that people had canceled their Disney trips, according to our audience. However, there will still be several people in the comments saying “No! Thankfully I haven’t had to cancel a trip before!” And to all those folks with trips booked, we wish you the best of luck.
