Extreme Winter Storm Could Impact Your Weekend Travel Plans

A massive winter storm known as a “bomb cyclone” is hitting the East Coast this weekend, per CNN. It will bring heavy snow, strong winds, and potentially coastal flooding. Advisories are in effect in states from Maine to Florida.

This new winter storm will put 14 states on the eastern side of the country into at least an extreme cold warning. Some areas already have ice storm warnings in place, with others on a storm watch. Residents of these areas are urged to stay home and keep warm.

2026 has been a historic winter, with 37 states currently under winter weather advisories. This new winter storm will affect New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.

Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Tennessee are currently under a winter weather advisory, where the storm is set to hit hardest. It will put North Carolina, South Carolina, and northern Georgia under a winter storm watch, where western counties are already under a winter storm warning. The National Weather Service expects wind gusts with hurricane-level force to hit the coast, which could cause significant flooding.

New York, Mississippi, and Louisiana are currently under an extreme cold warning. An extreme cold watch has been issued for parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. Extreme cold watches are issued for wind chills or temperatures below 15 degrees Fahrenheit, which will go as far south as Inland Martin County in Florida.

The northernmost half of Florida, including major cities Jacksonville and Orlando, will be under the extreme cold watch. These areas can see life-threatening cold conditions. Residents of these counties are advised to adjust outdoor plans to be inside, update their winter survival kit, protect pets by keeping them inside, and prepare their homes by insulating pipes, draining outdoor hoses, and ensuring heating systems are functioning properly.
