As of Monday, August 18th, Hurricane Erin was about 105 miles north-northeast of Grand Turk Island and about 915 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, moving northwest at 13 mph, according to AP News.

Hurricane Erin was originally forecast to strengthen up till Monday before it would start to get weaker, but it’s currently expected to remain as a large and major hurricane into the middle of this week.
Dare County, North Carolina, has declared an emergency and ordered an evacuation of Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks. The National Weather Service has said that several days of high winds and heavy waves could wash out part of the North Carolina Highway 12.

Hurricane Erin is 2025’s first Atlantic hurricane and reached a Category 5 status on Saturday, August 16th, with 160 mph winds before weakening.
The National Hurricane Center said, “You’re dealing with a major hurricane. The intensity is fluctuating. It’s a dangerous hurricane in any event.”

In parts of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the heavy winds and rain knocked out power for about 147,000 residents. More than 20 flights were canceled due to weather, but all ports in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were to reopen as the storm passed.

Along the east coastline between Florida’s Space Coast and coastal New England, dangerous rip currents are expected. Hurricane Erin is expected to head northward throughout the week.

If you’re heading to the beach along the East Coast, make sure you check the weather before you go and make safe decisions for your family. Even if the waves are safe, there might be more rain than normal, which can cause flooding.
We’re going to be keeping an eye on Hurricane Erin as it continues to remain a Category 4 storm, so keep following AllEars for more.
