In 2021, Gina Carano, who placed Cara Dune on the first season of The Mandalorian, was fired over a social media post. Later in 2024, Carano filed a lawsuit for wrongful termination and discrimination.

According to Variety, Carano and Disney settled the suit and said, “We look forward to identifying opportunities to work together in the near future.” What does this mean for Carano?
The Walt Disney Company, along with Lucasfilm, has reached a mutual agreement with Carano, and a Lucasfilm representative told Variety:
“The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with Gina Carano to resolve the issues in her pending lawsuit against the companies. Mrs. Carano was always well respected by her directors, co-stars, and staff, and she worked hard to perfect her craft while treating her colleagues with kindness and respect. With the lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Mr. Carano in the near future.”

Carano’s social media post in 2021 not only led to her being fired from The Mandalorian but also resulted in her being dropped as a client by United Talent Agency (UTA). Her lawsuit for wrongful termination and discrimination included a demand that Lucasfilm recast her and pay at least $75,000 in punitive damages.
Disney filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing they had “a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech” and had the right to fire an actor.

Carano went back to post on X that “Disney has confirmed what has been known all along, they will fire you if you say anything they disagree with, even if they have to MISREPRESENT, MALIGN, and MISCHARACTERIZE you to do it. They are now on record letting everyone who works for them know that Disney will take any chance they get to control what you say, what you think, or they will attempt to destroy your career. Glad we cleared that up. The First Amendment does not allow Disney to wantonly DISCRIMINATE, which is what they have done in my case, and frankly, have now admitted they did. If you ever wanted to know what today’s ‘Disney values’ are, they just told you.”

The lawsuit was funded by Elon Musk, owner of X, who said in 2023 that he would pay for any legal bills for people who were fired for their posts on the social media platform.
Carano recently posted on X, “…and the truth shall set you free” after the case was settled.

Does this mean we should expect to see Carano in an upcoming Lucasfilm project? We’ll have to wait and find out.
