6 Defunct (and Nightmare-Inducing) Disney World Characters We REFUSE To Stop Talking About

Disney World has done a pretty good job of giving us nightmares over the years.

From frightening attractions like Stitch’s Great Escape and its predecessor ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter to price increases that’ll make your heart stop, we’ve been scared by Disney World more than a few times. And today, we’re sharing some of Disney’s most nightmare-inducing defunct characters.

Hopper from It’s Tough to Be a Bug

In 2025, we said goodbye to It’s Tough to Be a Bug in Animal Kingdom, and toddlers everywhere are REJOICING. This show was described in the My Disney Experience app as being “scary, dark, and loud,” and boy, did that deliver. But perhaps the most frightening thing was the Hopper animatronic.

OK this is SCARY!

Hopper would just pop up out of the smoke to scare the children and call upon other bugs to terrorize us. He was FRIGHTENING, and we’re not mad that he’s gone.

ExtraTERRORestrial

Speaking of gone attractions, we just HAD to address ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter. It was a far cry from Disney’s typical vibe — dark, spooky, and riddled with scary alien presence.

An all-new alien creature was created for this attraction, and for those who experienced it during their vacations to Disney World, the alien probably still haunts them at night.

Test Track Crash Dummies

We recently opened the third version of Test Track in EPCOT, but back when Test Track 1.0 existed, they had some characters called the Test Dummies. These guys would take pictures with guests, and they had those dead, unseeing eyes going on.

Test Track!

They were made to look like test dummies come to life, and they were freaky. They’d definitely taken a beating in their line of work, so they were a little bit ramshackle in appearance and a lot bit unsettling.

Early Versions of Mickey and Friends

Speaking of unsettling, we’ve got to be honest here and talk about the early iterations of Mickey Mouse and friends. It took quite a while for Disney to get those character costumes just right.

If you ever look back on retro pictures of Mickey Mouse or Minnie Mouse or Donald Duck and can’t stop thinking about how creepy they looked…well, we promise you’re not alone!

Kitchen Kabaret

Kitchen Kabaret was an old attraction at EPCOT in The Land Pavilion that featured singing fruits and vegetables. The premise? Cute. The execution? A smidgen frightening.

I think it’s the eyes that really set these guys off (that seems to be the problem with most of the characters gone wrong). Anthropomorphic foods can be really cute sometimes, but these were the ones that you might rather listen to than watch.

Star Wars Weekends Characters

Last but not least, let’s talk about Star Wars Weekends! These events that used to happen in Hollywood Studios were incredibly popular and brought in Star Wars fans from all over the globe. They offered specialty entertainment throughout the events, which included several rare characters.

Some of these guys are scary!

You may be used to seeing Princess Leia and Darth Vader, but some of those aliens were downright unusual and nightmare-inducing.

If you never witnessed any of these characters in person, consider yourself lucky! I’m sure there will be something in Disney World currently that we’ll consider nightmare-inducing in the future, though.
