What’s going on at Universal?

Several months ago, a popular attraction at Universal’s Islands of Adventure closed without warning or fanfare… and has remained so. There’s been no announcement of a refurbishment or a reopening date, and we’re starting to worry that this opening-day staple may never return.
Pteranodon Flyers opened with the rest of Islands of Adventure in 1999, The attraction, located in the Camp Jurassic section of Jurassic Park “allows riders to “slowly soar and gently swing through the air in a comfy seat suspended from a track above” and according to Universal features “no sudden or scary movements” making it “perfect for younger guests not ready for big-kid thrills.”
The ride is notable for enforcing a height range of 36” to 56”, with anyone taller than the maximum height only able to ride if they’re accompanying someone within the designated height range. This makes the attraction one of the few at Islands of Adventure — and one of the only beyond Seuss Landing — to be geared toward young children.

In mid-April, the ride unexpectedly closed with no announcement. Approximately a week later, Pteranodon Flyers was added to Universal’s list of temporarily closed attractions with no reopening timeframe.

As of mid-August 2024, the ride has yet to reopen or provide a timeframe for when it might. Frankly, we’re starting to get a bit concerned that Pteranodon Flyers may never reopen. After all, the Jurassic Park section of Islands of Adventure saw the opening of the Jurassic World-themed VelociCoaster several years ago, which many believe is a portend of a full retheme of the island away from its 1990s aesthetics to match the modern movie series. While there’s nothing official about that, it certainly wouldn’t surprise us given Universal’s track record.

There has yet to be any concrete announcement of what’s going on with Pteranodon Flyers, which is only making us more concerned about the future of this original Islands of Adventure attraction. We’ll keep a lookout for any new updates on it, so stay tuned to AllEars for more!
