This NEW Universal Patent Could CHANGE EVERYTHING

Patents are very exciting in the theme park world, which is why we keep our eyes peeled for them every day of the week.

What are patents, you ask? Well, it’s where they submit an idea they have for a new ride, technology, attraction, etc., and by patenting it, if approved, it’s protected as their idea. However, the patent does NOT mean that a company has the right to make, use, offer for sale, sell, or import the invention, but that they have the right to protect their work. We know that Universal has a lot up its sleeves right now, especially over in Universal Orlando — could this new patent give us a hint at a new ride they’d like to bring into their parks?

In Universal’s new patent titled “System and Method for an On-Board Animated Figure in a Ride Environment,” the company details plans to have frogs, snakes and other practically animated creatures to crawl over ride vehicles. The idea is that you could be riding along, and all of the sudden, there’s a creature crawling on your car just a few feet away from you!

The patent explains that this effect would be created by using magnets or vacuum pumps to maintain points of contact that could disengage as the creature crawls (giving it the “crawling” look). The same technology could also be used on show action equipment inside the ride.

Patents usually don’t list what attractions the technology or idea could be used for, and this one is no different. However, with a potential Epic Universe expansion on the way, as well as a new land coming to Islands of Adventure to replace The Lost Continent, there are lots of possibilities.
