Earlier this week, the first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines arrived in California, and the state is set to receive thousands more soon. But, just days after it received its first set of vaccines, California reported the highest number of daily new coronavirus cases that the US has seen.

The Southern California region, including where Disneyland is located, is already under a stay-at-home order due to its ICU capacity percentages. With the arrival of vaccines, but the continuing rise of cases, how much longer could Orange County be under a stay-at-home order? One county health official has shared his thoughts.
Under California’s new regional stay-at-home order system, once a region’s ICU capacity falls below 15%, the stay-at-home order is triggered for that region. The order then remains in place for that region for at least 3 weeks, at which point the situation will be reevaluated.

Southern California is already in week 2 of its stay-at-home order. According to the Orange County Register, during a recent webinar, Orange County Health Officer Dr. Clayton Chau said, “we’re in week two, but I’m not foreseeing that we’ll be able to get out of the lockdown for (another) month at least.” So, at least according to one health officer, the county where Disneyland is located could be under lockdown for quite some time.

The Orange County Register reports that hospitals are utilizing their surge plans to open more beds, but ICU capacity for the Southern California region is getting close to being “tapped out.” Chau and others in the webinar noted that people should remain patient and follow health protocols, like wearing masks, social distancing, and not gathering.

Health officials are also getting ready to educate and encourage the public to get the vaccine once it becomes more generally available. A new app will soon become available from Orange County, California that will give users information about vaccines, where to get them, and remind them when its time for their second dose.

Right now, due to the stay-at-home order, eating and drinking is not permitted on Disneyland Resort property. Many restaurants have closed, and those that are open are open only for take-out. Many stores are also open at Downtown Disney for guests to shop at, but capacity is limited. We’ll continue to keep an eye out for more updates about the stay-at-home order and its effect on Disneyland Resort.
