Do People Really Inspect Your Room at Disney World Hotels?

Should YOU be worried about someone snooping through your hotel room at Disney World?

Fear not, all you future Disney World vacationers out there! While SOME parts of Disney can seem concerning or downright frightening, we’re here to make sure you don’t get caught up stressing over the WRONG things ahead of (or even during) your next trip — including whether or not you need to expect room inspections.

No, Disney does not have hidden cameras in your hotel room. Let’s put that spooky little rumor back in the attic where it belongs. But Disney Resort hotels do have room-entry policies guests should know about before they hang up that ‘Room Occupied’ sign and assume they’ve created a privacy force field.

Disney World isn’t spying on you. There’s no security team hiding under the bed, and the in-room ‘Hey Disney!’ device is optional. Disney says guests can keep the device muted during their stay, and you can also call the Front Desk if you have questions or concerns about it.

Not too dissimilar to Amazon’s Alexa, “Hey Disney” has made some guests nervous. However, you’re totally within your rights to unplug the device!

Hey, Disney

The thing guests DO need to know about is Disney’s room-entry policy.

Notably, a few years ago, Disney hotels changed their “Do Not Disturb” sign verbiage to “Room Occupied,” and the wording matters. Before the switch, if one of Disney’s housekeepers came across a “Do Not Disturb” sign on a guest’s door, they’d skip over the room entirely.

Do Not Disturb!

Disney’s current policy states that the company reserves the right to enter any Disney Resort hotel room for maintenance, safety, security, or other purposes, even if the ‘Room Occupied’ sign is displayed. In other words, that sign tells Cast Members you’d prefer privacy, but it does not guarantee that no one will enter

Housekeeping schedules can also vary by resort category and room type. Disney currently notes that Value and Moderate Resort rooms receive housekeeping every other day, Deluxe Resort rooms receive daily service, and Disney Vacation Club stays may follow a different service schedule depending on how the room was booked. Guests can also decline housekeeping during their stay, but declining housekeeping does not override Disney’s room-entry policy.

These policies became more common across the hotel industry after the 2017 Las Vegas shooting at Mandalay Bay, when hotels began rethinking how long rooms should go unchecked. It’s not the cheeriest vacation-planning topic, but the reasoning is rooted in guest safety.

A “Do Not Disturb” room was left unchecked for several days, which allowed the attacker enough time to develop their plan and carry it out.

As such, Disney has readjusted in an effort to maintain guest safety. “Room Occupied” signs let housekeeping know that guests prefer privacy while still technically allowing Cast Members permission to enter should the need arise.

While room checks may seem like an invasion of privacy, when put into the appropriate context, their necessity becomes much more apparent.

So what should you actually do with this information? Use the in-room safe for valuables, keep anything sensitive put away, and don’t assume the ‘Room Occupied’ sign means no one can enter. If you’re in the room sleeping, showering, working, or dealing with a child’s nap schedule, call the Front Desk and ask what options are available at your specific resort. It’s better to ask than to have a surprise knock turn your peaceful resort break into a tiny hallway opera.
