3 Reasons I Avoid This Popular Disney World Hotel Like the Plague

There’s no denying that Disney fans tend to put Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa on a pedestal, but I’m telling you why I actively avoid staying here.

Grand Floridian

With its elegant Victorian theme, monorail access, and reputation as the “best” of Disney World hotels, it’s often seen as the ultimate place to stay. But after multiple trips to Disney World, I’ve come to a surprising conclusion: it’s actually one of the resorts I actively avoid. While plenty of guests absolutely love it, my experiences have left me feeling like the hype doesn’t match the reality, and there are a few very specific reasons why I’d choose almost any other Disney hotel before booking a stay at the Grand Floridian.

The Lobby Gets Very Busy

One of the biggest reasons I avoid staying at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is the lobby crowds. This resort isn’t just popular with people staying there, but it’s also a major destination for visitors who are staying at other resorts and even locals. Thanks to the Monorail System, it’s incredibly easy for guests from other resorts and parks to hop off and explore the property. That means the lobby is rarely just for hotel guests. It’s often packed with people passing through, taking photos, or stopping by for dining reservations.

1900 Park Fare

The crowds become even more intense during the holiday season. The Grand Floridian is famous for its giant Christmas tree and the gingerbread house display, which makes it a must-see stop for many Disney visitors. While the decorations are undeniably beautiful, the result is that the lobby can feel more like a theme park attraction than a relaxing hotel space. If I’m paying deluxe-resort prices, I personally want my hotel to feel like a peaceful retreat — not another crowded stop on everyone’s Disney to-do list.

It Gives…Your Grandmother’s Living Room Vibes

I know the resort’s Victorian elegance is exactly why many people love it, but personally, the vibe just isn’t for me. The decor at the Grand Floridian leans heavily into florals, ornate furniture, and pastel tones that feel extremely traditional. Every time I walk through the resort, I can’t help but feel like I’m stepping into someone’s very fancy, and very formal, grandmother’s living room.

And listen, there’s nothing wrong with Grandma’s living room, but it’s not necessarily the vibe I’m looking for on a Disney vacation. When I stay at a Disney resort, I love it when the theming feels immersive or unique. Resorts like Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort or Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort feel like you’re transported somewhere special. The Grand Floridian, on the other hand, just feels a little too formal and old-fashioned for my personal taste. I will say, I do love the refurbishment that they did to the lobby, but it is still not to my taste.

The Price Tag

Then there’s the price, which is arguably the biggest reason I personally can’t justify staying here. The Grand Floridian consistently ranks as one of the most expensive hotels at Disney World, with nightly rates often soaring far above many other deluxe options. While you certainly get beautiful grounds and a prime location near Magic Kingdom, the cost can be hard to swallow when other resorts offer incredible experiences for less.

Even when you use discounts, it can still be costly. I ran the numbers for a six-night stay in a standard resort view room with the latest 30% off discount that recently dropped. It would cost you $3,717.59 for JUST the hotel (no tickets, no dining plan, etc). For the same dates, you can stay at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge in a resort view room for $2,595.70. That is a $1,121 difference for the same room at two deluxe resorts. I just cannot justify it, even with a discount.

There Are Some Major Perks

That said, the Grand Floridian absolutely has its strengths. The location alone is a huge selling point. Guests can ride the monorail directly to Magic Kingdom or even take the beautiful walking path to the park, which is one of the most convenient ways to start and end a park day. When fireworks end and transportation lines get long, being able to simply walk back to your resort is a major advantage.

Walkway

The resort also has an impressive lineup of dining and lounge options. From quick bites to signature dining, there’s a huge variety of places to eat without ever leaving the property. Even if I’m not staying there, I still enjoy visiting the Grand Floridian to explore the restaurants and grab a drink at one of the lounges. It’s a gorgeous resort with a lot to offer, but it’s just not the place I personally want to call “home” during my Disney vacation.
