UPDATE on the Big Changes Coming to the Orlando Airport

Disney World isn’t the only thing in the Orlando area currently undergoing HUGE changes. Orlando International Airport, which is often the first thing people see when they come to Orlando, is also about to get some huge upgrades.

Orlando International Airport

According to The Orlando Business Journal, the airport recently started working to secure $550 million to fund all the new projects. Let’s break down where that money will go.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority board recently unanimously approved $550 million in financing to support new construction projects at Orlando International Airport over the next three years. This is basically a $550 million line of credit that will act as interim funding until the board votes to issue a long-term bond.

Some projects that this money will help fund include designing and building expansions to taxiways at Terminal C. The airport also has plans to add additional passenger conveyance in Terminal C from Palm Court to Gate C230.

One of the projects also seeks to improve things like ticket counters and curbside check-in areas. The airport also wants to create a new baggage handling system for Terminals A and B. A new gate is also being created for Virgin Atlantic flights in Terminal C.

One of the most exciting projects involves improving food court areas and concession offerings. This includes restaurants and markets that have already been approved for the airport, including Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Raising Cane’s, Bricks & Bowls, and Shake Shack.

Another project will have the airport building elevated covered walkways to connect parking garages to terminals. The airport is also adding more parking spaces and upgrading the system to let visitors know how many spots are available in garages with signage, the airport app, and on the airport website. A new customer pick-up area is also part of the airport’s plans.

Behind the scenes, the airport will be constructing new facilities or expanding existing ones for services such as disposing of waste and maintaining and repairing vehicles.
