Every Disney pro started as a rookie, and trust me, some lessons in the parks are learned the hard way.

Planning your first trip to Disney World is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. With four theme parks, endless attractions, and more food options than you can count, it’s easy to get swept up in it all and forget about the little things that can make or break your vacation. While every Disney fan starts as a rookie, there are a few painful mistakes that instantly give away first-timers. The good news? With a little preparation, you can skip the rookie lessons and enjoy the magic like a pro.
Your Skin is Redder than Mickey’s Pants
The Florida sun is no joke, and first-timers often underestimate just how strong it is. Walking around the parks for hours without sunscreen is basically a guarantee that you’ll be glowing like a stop sign by the end of the day. Make sure to apply sunscreen before you even set foot in the park, and reapply every couple of hours, especially after water rides or heavy sweating. If you forget, don’t panic! Sunscreen is available for purchase at Disney resort gift shops and inside the parks, though you’ll pay more for it than you would at home. Trust us, the price is worth it to avoid spending the rest of your trip sunburned and miserable.

The Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen is one of our favorites at AllEars. It’s weightless and perfect for putting on under makeup without giving you that cakey or oily look.

The Blisters the Size of Spaceship Earth
It might be tempting to break in those brand-new sneakers on your Disney trip, but that’s one mistake you’ll regret before you even hit lunchtime. Guests walk miles, literally miles, each day in the parks, so you’ll want shoes that are already comfortable and broken in. Pro tip: pack moleskin or blister Band-Aids just in case. Even the most seasoned Disney fan can end up with sore feet after long days, and a little preparation goes a long way in keeping you moving (and smiling).

You’ll want to come prepared for blisters, because even the most broken-in shoes can still cause you issues at Disney World. Grab a pack of these Moleskin Adhesive Pads to help you stay comfortable on your whole trip.

The Stumble We All Watch You Take on Main Street
Main Street, U.S.A. is one of the most charming spots in Disney World, but it also comes with one big hazard: those old-fashioned trolley tracks. Distracted by Cinderella Castle? Checking the app for your next Lightning Lane? That’s when those sneaky tracks grab your foot and trip you up. Keep your eyes down when crossing and step carefully to avoid becoming part of the unintentional “entertainment” of the day. It’s a rookie move we’ve all seen and one you’ll want to avoid.

Say Goodbye to Those Hats and Ears
We know your Minnie ears look adorable, and that baseball cap is keeping the sun off your face. But when a Cast Member tells you to remove them before a ride, they aren’t joking. Hats and ears fly off all the time on roller coasters and thrill rides, and once they’re gone, it’s a pain to track them down. Do yourself a favor: stash them in a backpack, under your seat, or in the ride’s storage pouch before takeoff. That way, you’re not spending precious park time hunting down Guest Services to see if your lost ears made it back to Lost and Found.

The Drenched Clothes That Say “I Didn’t Pack Rain Gear”
If you’ve heard the phrase “Florida weather is unpredictable,” let us translate: it’s going to rain at least once during your trip. Nothing screams “rookie” like being caught in a downpour without a poncho, umbrella, or even a backup outfit for the kids. Savvy Disney fans pack lightweight ponchos and foldable umbrellas to avoid walking around in soaked socks and shorts. If you do get caught without gear, don’t worry, ponchos and umbrellas are sold in almost every shop inside the parks. Just know you’ll be paying Disney prices for something you could have grabbed at the dollar store back home.

If you want to be prepared and save yourself money, order the Frogg Togg poncho. Multiple team members of ours use these on their park trips, and we love how you can store them and reuse them again.

Getting Trapped by the Parades
Disney parades are spectacular, but they also cut right through the middle of the park, and if you’re not paying attention, you can get stuck on the wrong side of the route. Imagine having a Lightning Lane for Pirates of the Caribbean, but you’re trapped in Liberty Square as Festival of Fantasy rolls by. Ouch. Always check the parade times in the My Disney Experience app and be aware of the route. If you don’t want to watch, plan ahead to be on the side of the park you need to be before it starts. Trust us, fighting through a crowd of parade-watchers is not the kind of Disney memory you want to make.

Casually Strolling Up to Be Our Guest for a Table
Disney dining is part of the magic, but if you think you can just wander up to Be Our Guest, Cinderella’s Royal Table, or Oga’s Cantina for a table, you’re in for a painful surprise. The most popular restaurants book up fast, often within minutes when reservations open 60 days in advance. While some locations offer walk-up lists, they’re never a guarantee, especially during busy times of year. To avoid disappointment, set your alarm and grab those Advanced Dining Reservations as soon as your booking window opens. Disney food is worth planning for!
