It’s been a tough year so far for flying, especially over the last month or so.
Just last month, an update to Crowdstrike software disabled many airlines, leaving flights delayed and canceled for days, including flights at Orlando International Airport. Now, it looks like more delays are happening at the airport, particularly with Southwest Airlines.
According to FlightAware, 162 flights are currently delayed at Orlando International Airport. At one point, this number was up to 244 flights delayed. The majority of flight delays are happening with Southwest Airlines, which has recently been under fire for getting rid of its open seat policy. However, as of this morning, a total of 94 flights have already been canceled. So it seems some of the delayed flights might have been eventually canceled. Let’s just say it’s not a good time to be flying to Orlando.
We don’t have any information yet as to why all these flights have been delayed or canceled, but this comes just ahead of Tropical Storm Debby, expected to become Hurricane Debby, arriving in Florida tomorrow, August 5th. A state of emergency has already been declared for the state of Florida. It’s likely more flight delays and cancellations will happen in the state as a result of the storm.
Orlando International Airport remains open and operational at this time, according to a recent social media post. However, if you’re flying into or out of Orlando today, you’ll want to make sure you have your notifications turned on for your airline’s app and have a way to get flight updates.
Weather Alert: ⛈️ Our airport is open and operational while we continue to monitor Tropical Storm Debby. Please check with your airline directly in regards to their operations for the most up-to-date flight information. Are you flying into or out of Orlando today? Has your flight been canceled or delayed? Let us know in the comments!
My daughter’s flight from Nashville to Orlando has been canceled on Southwest . Strange in that Orlando airport is open. She now has to fend for herself for a place to bed down foe the night. After reading this article, what is the real reason for canceling her flight? Should Southwest be removed from my favorite airline list? We use to be able to gauge flying conditions based on Southwest. Today everyone else is flying but Southwest. Hmmm! Was this planned? The rate for today’s flight was so low, it was worth the delay…but, was the cancelation planned and Debby has made the decision easier? Nevertheless, I am disappointed about Southwest’s conduct this morning. They should have left my daughter in DC where she has family and friends who could have accommodated her delay. JS
