A TV show that Disney previously scrapped before it aired has now found success on a new platform.
Last summer, Disney made the decision to cancel The Spiderwick Chronicles, a fantasy series Paramount was producing for Disney+. The show had recently finished production on its first season, but it never made it to air on Disney+. But after being picked up by a different streaming service, The Spiderwick Chronicles has now turned into a success story.
After being canceled by Disney, The Spiderwick Chronicles was shopped to other companies and was picked up by The Roku Channel, an ad-supported streaming platform built into the company’s smart TV interfaces and stand-alone streaming devices.
All eight episodes of season one of The Spiderwick Chronicles debuted on Roku last week, joining the platform’s growing library of original content, which currently includes titles like the movie Weird: The Al Yankovic Story and a reboot of The Great American Baking Show.
And the move has paid off so far — on Tuesday, Roku announced that The Spiderwick Chronicles had the best first weekend of any on-demand title on the streaming platform, in terms of total hours streamed. While they didn’t release specific numbers, the company said the show has been watched by “millions of streamers” in its first three days on the platform.
Based on novels by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, The Spiderwick Chronicles follows the adventures of the Grace family, who move into an old Victorian estate in rural America and discover a secret world of magic.
Roku is pleased with the show’s performance so far, but they have not yet announced whether it will receive a second season. Regarding the future of the series, a spokesperson for Roku said, “We’re focused on and proud of the success of Season 1.”
We’ll continue to report back with more updates on streaming content, so stay tuned to AllEars for more media news.

I’ve waited years for a second movie for the spiderwick chronicles. Only to be brilliantly surprised by the new series! I absolutely loved it. Its left very open ended for a second season. I am hoping that it does well enough in Roku’s eyes that they’ll see fit to bless us all with it. Totally appreciative ~Bella
