New Report Reveals Orlando Airport Is Among the CHEAPEST in America

Sometimes, when we book flights to Orlando for our Disney World vacations, it feels like a game of roulette. We put in the dates of our trip, click “search for flights,” and cross our fingers that we see good deals pop up. It’s the worst when your transportation to Florida eats up a huge chunk of your vacation budget!

If you’ve flown in and out of Orlando a few times, you might have noticed a trend: flights to and from the Orlando International Airport usually have pretty good deals when it comes to airfare. In fact, this airport ranks in the top five CHEAPEST airports in America!

According to a study conducted by Finance Buzz, the Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the third cheapest airport of the 45 busiest airports in America!

The study identified the 45 busiest airports in the country and calculated the average cost of airfare for flights in and out of each one in 2022. Here’s a list of the top five cheapest airports:

  1. Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) $264.24
  2. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) $271.78
  3. Orlando International Airport (MCO) $273.35
  4. Oakland International Airport (OAK) $288.23
  5. Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) $303.05

The average airfare for the Orlando Airport in 2022 was $273.35. The CHEAPEST airport in the country is the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, which has earned the number one spot a few times in the last several years.

Finance Buzz reported that “overall, the national average airfare cost increased by 14.1% from 2021 to 2022 when adjusted for inflation (23.2% in non-adjusted dollars). That’s a remarkable increase for a single year.”

Looking at the other end of the scale, here are the top five most expensive airports in America:

  1. Dulles International Airport (IAD) $494.78
  2. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) $456.86
  3. Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) $444.42
  4. (tie) Portland International Airport (PDX) $425.35
  5. (tie) Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) $425.35

Airports overall seem to have gotten significantly more expensive. This study found that only two airports had average airfare exceeding $400 last year, but this year, there were eleven (with Dulles International Airport almost reaching $500).

On average, “fares at the 45 busiest airports in the country rose by $50.67” from 2021 to 2022.
