Back in April, Disney announced a new project the company would be taking on — affordable housing.

This came after Universal announced a plan for a new affordable housing community and the two entertainment giants seem to have a similar plan. But now, Disney just released a bunch of new details on their plan for the affordable housing community in Orlando!
Disney starts off by sharing the location of the new housing area. The 80 acres of land is located west of State Road 429 near schools and shopping, like Flamingo Crossings Town Center. This location is also only a few miles from Magic Kingdom. The entire development is set to include over 1,300 units.

Disney also announced who will build, own, and operate the area — The Michaels Organization. The project is set to be privately financed and applicants will have to be within a certain income range. These qualifying applicants may include Disney Cast Members.

Jeff Vahle, President of Walt Disney World Resort, said, “We’re committed to being a part of this solution which will bring more attainable housing to Central Florida.” He also said Disney will “continue to find ways to use our resources to make a difference in the community we call home, and we’re excited to take this step with a nationally recognized developer.”

The Michaels Organization CEO John J. O’Donnell also commented on the project saying “We are excited to work with an iconic brand like Disney to deliver attainable housing for the Central Florida community. Our goal is to create a repeatable model that we hope will inspire other companies and municipalities to create high quality, attainable housing in their own communities.”

As we learn more about Disney’s affordable housing project, we’ll continue to keep you updated on any developments. There is currently no timeline for when the project will be complete, but the company has taken many steps since the original announcement in April of 2022. Stay tuned for more updates!
