Nearly 10 Million People (!!) Watched the ‘House of Dragon’ Premiere, Breaking HBO Records

History was made last night with the series premiere of a new show.

We’ve reported on opening numbers in the past for both television series and films in theaters. House of the Dragon, the Games of Thrones prequel series, premiered on HBO and HBO Max last night with its first episode, and it made history as the most watched HBO series premiere ever.

According to Variety, the premiere episode of House of the Dragon brought in 9.99 million viewers with HBO and HBO Max combined. This includes linear airings as well as HBO Max streams during premiere night, which was Sunday, August 21st. The show also became the biggest European launch for HBO and HBO Max, according to Variety.

For comparison, Game of Thrones, the company’s biggest hit to date, premiered back in 2011 to 4.2 million viewers. The premiere of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones was watched by 17.9 million people, so the fact that the series premiere of the prequel show gained over half as many views is very impressive. This new prequel series is based on author George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, which takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
