Disney+ has been a standout streaming service ever since it first debuted.

With original series like Loki, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and even behind-the-scenes looks at some of our favorite Disney rides, there’s probably something on Disney+ for just about everyone. And now, there’s even more to watch on the popular service thanks to the new original animated series, BAYMAX! You might recognize the character from Big Hero 6, and we recently learned some insider secrets on just why the creators wanted to bring him back and more!
The creators and producers behind the new Disney+ series BAYMAX! recently gathered for a virtual press conference, and we were invited to check it out.
We were lucky enough to learn some behind-the-scenes details from the team, like why they chose to focus on Baymax and his job as a health professional and what exactly they hope to bring to viewers with this show.

Baymax is known for being a lovable, inflatable robot with a childlike innocence about him. His main function is as a Healthcare Companion, and he’s able to treat patients with just one scan. The series will follow Baymax as he treats one patient per episode, giving them both medical and life advice.

BAYMAX! the series is created and directed by Don Hall, who is also the creator and director of Big Hero 6. Also participating in the virtual press conference were Roy Conli, producer; Bradford Simonsen, producer; and Scott Adsit, the voice of Baymax!

With Baymax being such a lovable character, creator Don Hall was asked why he thought the character resonated with so many people from around the world. He chalks it up to an “innate compassion” built into Baymax, plus his relentless desire to help. He went on to say that he hopes Baymax and the other characters are inspiring and inspire others to help as well.
Focusing on Baymax’s main profession as a Healthcare Companion was a choice made from the very beginning, as the showrunners wanted to focus on every day heroes, and not just those with superpowers. In fact, each episode of the show features a dedication to healthcare heroes.

The series takes place in San Fransokyo, the same fictional city you might recognize from Big Hero 6. When asked what it was like returning to San Fransokyo seven years after the film, Brad Simonsen mentioned how fun it was to bring everything they loved about San Fransokyo back. And, the group went on to share that there are “all kinds” of Easter Eggs to find in San Fransokyo and beyond — it might take you more than one watch to catch them all!

Of course, the character of Baymax wouldn’t be who he is without his voice, and when Scott Adsit was asked what the most rewarding part about voicing Baymax was, he stated that knowing he originated the role and was at the beginning of something great was “huge.”
Scott went on to share that one of his favorite things about being Baymax is when kids meet him and find out he’s Baymax — for a moment, he really is Baymax to them.

The series is big on recognizing and stepping in when others need help, and the creators were asked the message they wanted viewers to take away from the show. Roy Conli said, “Reach out and help if you see someone.” Don shared that we should hug our healthcare workers and support them. Brad stated, “Face your fears, embrace change, and don’t be afraid,” and Scott ended with, “Be kind, and when you can — be funny.”
BAYMAX! is now streaming on Disney+, so you can finally go back and visit San Fransokyo and learn more about Baymax and what he was created to do. For the latest Disney+ news and more, be sure to stay tuned to AllEars.
