Tenaya Stone Spa

The Tenaya Stone Spa has been designed with inspiration from the “spirit of nature, indigenous cultures of California and the iconic Craftsman design of the hotel.” As a matter of fact, Tenaya means “to dream” in the indigenous culture of the Yosemite Valley. Disney Cultural Representatives worked with various tribes to bring about the natural order of four throughout the spa, which is reflected in the circle behind the front desk.

This means you’ll find four main colors (white, red, black, yellow), four stones (white magnesite, red pumice, black obsidian, gold pyrite), and four indigenous medicinal plants (sweet grass, sage, cedar, tobacco) to represent earth, air, water, and fire. Plus, there are special signifiers located throughout the Tenaya Spa for the four directional points.

Redwood Tree Root Chandelier

In contrast with the Grand Californian Hotel, in which the design encourages your eyes to look up and out, at Tenaya Stone Spa they want guests to look down and inward as they enter this space of wellness. One way they sought to achieve that is through the wood life rings floor, which serve to ground the guest as they enter the spa.

Flooring

The Tenaya Stone was formed millions of years ago and is part of the earth, and guests are encouraged to touch the stone to feel the sense of community and connection to the earth. Traditionally, the Tenaya Stone was a way of gathering in ceremony and reflection.

The four quadrant design is also about balancing yourself, socially, spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
