A 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Series is Coming to Disney+

Disney+ has been crushing it with the original content since it launched in 2019.

From exciting Marvel shows like Loki and What If…? to spin offs of popular movies like Monsters at Work, there is no shortage of original ideas on the streaming platform. And we just found out about a new series that is sure to have adventurers excited!

A 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea series is coming to Disney+!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney+ has ordered the show Nautilus, which will be a 10-part live-action series based on Jules Verne’s classic novel. The series will put a spin on the original story, telling the origin story of Captain Nemo and his legendary submarine, The Nautilus.

This is not the first adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Disney. In 1954, the film of the same name starred James Mason as Captain Nemo and Kirk Douglas as Ned Land, the monster-harpooner.

And many classic Disney fans will remember the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ride that opened with  Magic Kingdom in 1971.

The series will start filming in early 2022 and is developed and co-produced by Moonriver TV’s Xavier Marchand and Seven Stories’ Anand Tucker. The series is written and executive produced by James Dormer (Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands).

Johanna Devereaux, who is also executive producing the project, says, “The series will be breathtaking, action-packed and a huge amount of fun.” Devereaux is also the director of scripted original content for EMEA at Disney+.

This grows the European slate for Disney+, who said last year that it was aiming for 50 productions commissioned from the continent by 2024. There were 13 titles announced from other European counties earlier this year, including a new unscripted series with David Beckham. We can’t wait to find out more about the new series, so stay tuned to All Ears for updates!
