As reported by Deadline, Disney chose not to order a second season of the series set during the space race. This marks Disney+’s first scripted series cancellation.

Based on Tom Wolfe’s best-selling book of the same name, the eight-episode series, The Right Stuff, followed NASA’s Mercury Seven team in 1959 as they raced to ensure America made it to space within an ambitious two-year timespan. The show was reportedly a modest performer for Disney+, and it did not make it into Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming ratings.

Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind The Right Stuff, is currently shopping the series to other media outlets, with TNT and HBO Max considered as potential targets. There is a major financial incentive for the studio to try to keep the show going — in November 2020, the series was given $13.7 million to move from Florida to California for Season 2, the fourth-highest relocating incentive ever awarded under the CFC program.
