NEWS! California Residents are Urged to Self-Quarantine Fourteen Days After Travel

Today, California Secretary of Health Dr. Mark Ghaly shared an update on the state’s efforts in once again flattening the curve. The state has been reporting another rise in positive cases over the past few weeks, as more residents look ahead to increased travel and holiday gatherings.

In an effort to mitigate the risk that the virus could continue to spread, California joined the states of Oregon and Washington in issuing a joint west coast travel advisory.

The travel advisory urges residents of these states to self-quarantine for fourteen days upon returning from out-of-state travel. The advisory also discourages any nonessential travel to other states. You can read the full travel advisory here.

This travel advisory, of course, comes less than two weeks before what is usually the busiest travel week of the calendar year. Dr. Ghaly encouraged Californians to keep holiday gatherings to members of their immediate household and “meet” with other family members virtually.

Several reporters asked Dr. Ghaly why this advisory is not a ban or a mandate. Dr. Ghaly replied by pointing out the difficulty in enforcing a mandate when the population of California is forty million people.
