I made the dubious decision of visiting the Magic Kingdom this New Year’s Eve, and encountered a problem… I couldn’t leave! That doesn’t sound much like a problem, but when there’s an extended wait for the Monorail, the Most Magical Place on Earth doesn’t seem so magical.

Fortunately, guests at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa will soon have an alternative to long waits and cramped cabins: a brand new pedestrian walkway that leads directly to the resort!

The Grand Floridian has been without a walkway since its opening in the 1980s, due to the demands of the Electrical Water Pageant. This little known long-runner has pleased guests at the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake resorts since 1971 and shows no sign of fizzing out. However, the path between the Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom would cross over a critical waterway. Putting a normal bridge there would keep the barges from entering the lagoon, putting an end to this Disney classic.

Fortunately, it seems like Disney has come up with a clever solution; a rotating drawbridge!

The new bridge is already taking form, with the core mechanism and railings already in place. The new walkway needs a bit of Disney magic… and some pavement, of course, but once it’s done, guests will be able to freely walk between the Grand Floridian and Magic Kingdom!
We’ll have more updates on this new addition to the World as it develops.

I see a new RunDisney path in the future
One of the nicest things about this enhancement is that you will be able to walk from the Polynesian (and TTC) all the way to the gates of the Magic Kingdom if you’re not in a hurry and want a pleasant stroll in a morning or evening! Looking forward to it!
This is a great addition. You could then also use this for Polynesian in situations like you have just described or catch monorail from GF.
