Female Avengers, assemble! You could win an internship at Marvel Studios, but to be eligible, you must enter the Girls Reforming The Future Challenge by Saturday night.
The contest is a tie-in to the new movie “Captain America: Civil War” that will be released on May 6. In the movie, former Avengers allies Captain America and Iron Man find themselves facing off over differing opinions about how the Avengers should operate — with or without government oversight. Both sides, however, still believe it is the Avengers’ purpose to make the world a better place, and that’s the theme of the contest Marvel is sponsoring.
Girls ages 15 to 18 (in grades 10 through 12) are invited to create a project that has the potential to change the world and submit a video detailing the project and its significance. Each project must use STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) principles. The project may be one that had previously been developed for a class, for a science competition, or just for fun.
To enter, each participant must fill out the application at www.captainamericacivilwarchallenge.com/home After completing the form, the participant will receive an acceptance e-mail and instructions for completing and uploading a video submission of your project. The video can only picture the entrant, can be no longer than five minutes and must include answers to these questions:
– What is your project?
– How did you use STEM to create your project?
– How could your project bring positive change to the world?
– What did you learn while developing this project?
– How did working on the project empower you to explore your own strength of character?
– What next steps do you plan to take with your project?
– Why are you interested in an internship with Marvel Studios?
– What would you like to learn from an internship with Marvel Studios?
Additional rules regarding the video submissions can be found here.
Entries will be judges on the following criteria:
– Project (60%): Originality of idea (50%), Potential for positive change (20%), STEM skills used (15%), Practicality of project (15%)
– Internship (20%): Quality of reasoning (65%), Expressed understanding of Marvel Studios (20%), Demonstrated enthusiasm for opportunity (10%), Expectation of experience (5%)
– Personal Growth (15%): Strength of “next steps” plan (60%), Lessons learned from the project. (40%)
– Creativity and Video Production of Submission (5%)
Five finalists will be chosen, and they receive a trip to Los Angeles to present their projects to a panel of judges April 10-13. While there, the finalists will have other experiences, such as attending the movie premiere of “Captain America: Civil War” and tours of Walt Disney Studios and a Dolby facility.
The Grand Prize winner will be awarded the one-week internship, which will take place at a mutually agreed upon time and must be completed by Dec. 24, 2016.
Participants must be legal residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia as of 9 p.m. PST March 26, 2016, which is the deadline for entries to be received. Winners will be notified on or about March 30.
