We just got word on a new Disney+ series in the works, but we can guarantee it’s not the IP you’re thinking of. Per Deadline, Disney+ has just acquired the rights to a new Casper the Friendly Ghost show!

In a competitive five-way bidding war, Disney+ has landed a new series take on Casper the Friendly Ghost. No specifics on the new Casper have been released yet, but it’s described as a modern update on the classic ghost story and is in the early stages of development.
The live-action project will be directed and written by Rob Letterman, behind Shark Tale (2004), Monsters vs. Aliens (2009), and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu (2019). It will be co-written by Hilary Winston, who collaborated with Letterman while they executive-produced another Disney+ supernatural series, Goosebumps.

Steven Spielberg, who executive-produced the 1995 Universal movie Casper starring Christina Ricci, will also return for the television show. It will be produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, behind Suits, The Umbrella Academy, and Mr. Robot.

If the Casper show goes to series, this will be the first Universal project on Disney+. It’s a very rare instance of a Disney project drawing IP from their competitor’s catalogs, with seemingly no plans for acquisition. In the past, this has happened with Indiana Jones and Avatar in the Disney Parks, which were bought by Disney a few years later.

We’re so excited to see what this Casper show will be like on Disney+. Stay tuned to AllEars for more Disney news!
